A garden is a room without a ceiling. It asks the same questions any good room does — how you'll move through it, what you'll touch, where the light falls at six in the evening.
We start with how a household actually spends a Tuesday evening or a Sunday morning, then build the planting, stonework, and structure around that. Design, materials, and architecture are worked out together from the beginning, not layered on after the fact — so the result reads as though the landscape and the house were always meant to be seen together.
The Barton Hills Residence
A steeply sloped lot became a series of level terraces, tied together by a run of hand-set limestone steps. Native little bluestem and Gulf muhly grass soften the hardscape, and a heritage live oak, protected through construction, now shades the lower terrace.

The West Lake Garden
A once-empty side yard is now the family's main gathering space: a shallow reflecting pool, a dining terrace beneath a steel-framed arbor, and planting beds thick with cenizo and Turk's cap that draw hummingbirds through the summer.

A small studio, built for attention.
Willow & Stone is a residential landscape studio based in Austin, working on a small number of projects at a time so each one gets the same attention from first sketch to final planting.
The studio was founded by a landscape architect and a stone mason who wanted to build gardens the way the best local builders build houses — slowly, in Central Texas conditions, and made to last through the next twenty summers, not just look finished for the first one.

A Few Things to Know.
We start with a paid site visit and consultation, then develop a concept plan, materials palette, and phased budget. Most residential projects go through two to three rounds of revisions before we move into construction drawings.
Design usually takes four to eight weeks depending on scope. Construction ranges from a few weeks for a smaller garden refresh to four or five months for a full property with pool and hardscape.
Most of our work falls between $40,000 and $250,000+, covering everything from a courtyard refresh to a full-property redesign. We're also happy to talk through smaller, planting-only projects.
Landscape design is the planning stage — the drawings, plant palette, and materials that define a project. Landscaping, or landscape construction, is building it. We do both, with the same team carrying the work from first drawing to finished garden.
Yes. New gardens need close attention in their first year, and we offer seasonal maintenance plans to keep the planting and hardscape holding up the way they were designed.
Austin, West Lake Hills, Bee Cave, Lakeway, Rollingwood, Cedar Park, and nearby parts of the Hill Country. If you're just outside that radius, reach out anyway — we take on a limited number of projects farther out each year.
