Landscapes Made for Living.

We design and craft thoughtful outdoor spaces where architecture, nature, and everyday life meet.

Our philosophy

Outside, Considered.

A garden is a room without a ceiling. It asks the same questions any good room does — how you'll move through it, what you'll touch, where the light falls at six in the evening.

We start with how a household actually spends a Tuesday evening or a Sunday morning, then build the planting, stonework, and structure around that. Design, materials, and architecture are worked out together from the beginning, not layered on after the fact — so the result reads as though the landscape and the house were always meant to be seen together.

The Barton Hills Residence

A steeply sloped lot became a series of level terraces, tied together by a run of hand-set limestone steps. Native little bluestem and Gulf muhly grass soften the hardscape, and a heritage live oak, protected through construction, now shades the lower terrace.

What we do
  • 01

    Landscape Design

Master planning for the whole property — grading, sightlines, and how each outdoor room connects to the next, developed alongside your architect or builder when needed.

  • 02

    Outdoor Living

Kitchens, fire features, pergolas, and shaded seating built for how you actually entertain, from a quiet weeknight dinner to a yard full of neighbors.

  • 03

    Garden Design

Planting plans built around Central Texas conditions — thin, alkaline soil and long summers — using native and adapted species that still feel lush.

  • 04

    Planting & Irrigation

Installation and efficient drip irrigation, zoned by water need, so the garden matures well without the water bill creeping up alongside it.

  • 05

    Hardscape & Stonework

Limestone, travertine, and steel — patios, walls, and steps built to hold their line for decades, not just look good in the first year.

  • 06

    Landscape Maintenance

Seasonal care that keeps a design looking the way it was drawn: pruning, bed upkeep, irrigation checks, and honest advice when something needs to change.

The West Lake Garden

A once-empty side yard is now the family's main gathering space: a shallow reflecting pool, a dining terrace beneath a steel-framed arbor, and planting beds thick with cenizo and Turk's cap that draw hummingbirds through the summer.

How we work

The Willow & Stone Approach

01

Discover

A first visit to walk the property together — how you live now, what isn't working, what you want more of. We take stock of existing trees, drainage, sun, and soil.

02

Design

Concept plans, a materials and planting palette, and a phased budget, refined with you over a few working sessions until the plan feels right.

03

Build

Our own crews handle grading, hardscape, and planting, with a single point of contact from the first shovel to the final walkthrough.

04

Grow

A first-year care plan and seasonal check-ins while the garden establishes, so the planting fills in the way it was designed to.

About the studio

A small studio, built for attention.

Willow & Stone is a residential landscape studio based in Austin, working on a small number of projects at a time so each one gets the same attention from first sketch to final planting.

The studio was founded by a landscape architect and a stone mason who wanted to build gardens the way the best local builders build houses — slowly, in Central Texas conditions, and made to last through the next twenty summers, not just look finished for the first one.

From our clients

They were the first landscaping company to actually ask what we wanted before pulling out a plant list. Our backyard finally works with the pool instead of just surrounding it.

Meredith Calloway — West Lake Hills

The stonework on our front steps still looks like it settled there naturally, three years on. That's harder to pull off than people think.

Daniel Osei — Barton Hills

We told them we wanted low water and low fuss, and that's exactly what we got — plus a lot more birds and butterflies than we expected.

Common questions

A Few Things to Know.

We start with a paid site visit and consultation, then develop a concept plan, materials palette, and phased budget. Most residential projects go through two to three rounds of revisions before we move into construction drawings.

Design usually takes four to eight weeks depending on scope. Construction ranges from a few weeks for a smaller garden refresh to four or five months for a full property with pool and hardscape.

Most of our work falls between $40,000 and $250,000+, covering everything from a courtyard refresh to a full-property redesign. We're also happy to talk through smaller, planting-only projects.

Landscape design is the planning stage — the drawings, plant palette, and materials that define a project. Landscaping, or landscape construction, is building it. We do both, with the same team carrying the work from first drawing to finished garden.

Yes. New gardens need close attention in their first year, and we offer seasonal maintenance plans to keep the planting and hardscape holding up the way they were designed.

Austin, West Lake Hills, Bee Cave, Lakeway, Rollingwood, Cedar Park, and nearby parts of the Hill Country. If you're just outside that radius, reach out anyway — we take on a limited number of projects farther out each year.
